About Pancha Karma Detox & Weight Loss

Pancha karma (five healing actions) is a series of detoxifying, balancing, and nourishing therapies performed over a series of 5, 7, 9, 10, 14, 21 or more days. It is the principle program in Ayurveda, promoting resilient health and ridding the body of disease and its causative factors. It is known for its beneficial effects on overall health, wellness and self-healing.

Developed thousands of years ago in India and offered by Ayurveda physicians trained in India, Pancha karma is the most popular program at Green Ayurveda Spa. For detoxifying the body, strengthening the immune system, and restoring balance and well-being, Pancha karma is the ultimate mind-body healing experience.

Why Pancha Karma?

Ayurveda emphasizes both prevention and healing. Pancha karma is recommended for anyone as part of their seasonal or yearly health maintenance, to help acute or chronic conditions or as preparation for further rejuvenation therapies (Rasayana).

As we live in a toxic world; Ayurveda believe that even healthy people need panchakarma because our environment (like air, water sources, oceans, rivers, foods, fruits, vegetables) is so polluted by synthetic chemicals.

Our wrong diet, seasonal changes, habits, lifestyle, deep seated past emotions and excess stress can cause the imbalances in the doshas, which may lead to disturbance in the Agni(digestive fire), which slowly produce AMA(toxins) in the  physical body (Coated tongue ,high cholesterol, high blood pressure, increased triglycerides, thickening of arteries, cancer, allergies, infertility, early tooth decay and tartar, joint pain & stiffness, excess body weight, bad body odor, excess mucus and low immunity) and mind (decreased energy, depression, dullness, irritability, low mood, poor concentration and memory)

Damaged and stressed body channels (srothas with Ama) are the most ideal environment to develop chronic diseases. Panchakarma removes deep seated toxins and promotes emotional release. This ultimate Detox and stress management program triggers your body’s healing mechanism. It is also recommended for couples as part of a pre-conception programme to promote healthy progeny and a safe pregnancy.

According to Ayurveda, pancha karma helps to remove the root causes of disease by removing many years of accumulated Ama.

What is Ama?

Three Kinds of Toxins According to Ayurveda

Ama – Mild Toxin – The most common type is ama, which is the sticky waste-product of digestion that builds up in the digestive tract when your digestion is either weak or overloaded with the wrong foods.

Amavisha – Reactive Ama Toxin – If ama is not cleared from the body and continues to build up, eventually it can leave the digestive tract and start circulating through the body. Once it settles in a specific area, over time ama becomes reactive and mixes with the subdoshas, the dhatus (body tissues), or malas (waste products such as urine). When it mixes with these parts of the physiology, it becomes amavisha, a more reactive, toxic type of AMA

Garvisha – Environmental Toxins – The third type of toxins are what we would call environmental toxins today. Environmental toxins come from outside the body and include pesticides and chemical fertilizers in food, as well as preservatives, additives and genetically engineered foods. Food that has “gone bad” and is filled with harmful bacteria also falls in this category. Other garavisha toxins include arsenic, lead, asbestos, chemicals in detergents and household supplies, poisons, air and water pollution, chemicals and synthetics in clothing, and recreational drugs.

Amavisha and garavisha types of toxins are best handled by an ayurvedic physician, but there are a number of things you can do on an ongoing basis to prevent AMA from building up in your body.

How Does Pancha Karma Detox works @ Green:

Pancha-Karma Retreat can be run any time of the year. It can be done as individual or group customized retreat.

You will be having an initial detailed Ayurvedic consultation 7-10 days prior to Pancha Karma (can be an on-line consultation) to determine your prakruthi (dosha balance) and vikruthi (dosha imbalance), agni (digestive fire), ama (toxins), whether you are strong enough to withstand the cleansing regimen, and rules out contraindications and current health conditions. Then the Ayurvedic Doctor will tailor a customized pancha karma program for you.

During the consultation we advise the poorva karma (things you have to follow 7 days prior, at home before the pancha karma)

Pancha karma is a three stage process:

  1. Purva karma: Preparatory Phase, which have to be done before the main detoxification. Which again have 3 steps
  • Diet & Lifestyle preparation at home
  • Snehana/Oleation (Snehapana & Bahya Snehana)
  • Swedana/Sudation

After initial online/phone consultation our Ayurveda Doctor will prepare special diet and lifestyle to follow at home 7 days prior to coming to Green Spa.

Internal Oleation (Snehapana) after 7 days of special diet and lifestyle at home, you will come to the spa on an empty stomach and the Ayurveda Doctor will give you a Medicated Ghee (internal oleation). The amount of Medicated Ghee intake will be increased every day depends on your dosha, agni and medical condition.
If you are unable to take medicated ghee, medicated oil or medicated decoction will be used – which will have the same effects of medicated ghee.
As most of the toxins are fat soluble, medicated ghee loosens impurities (ama), helps to lubricate the body’s subtle channels or srotas and cleanses internal organs.

External Oleation (Bahya snehana) with different Ayurveda therapies like abyanga, shirodhara etc; these therapies will helps to liquefy deep-seated ama in Dhatus-the body’s seven tissue like rasa (plasma), rakta (blood), mamsa (muscles), meda (Fat), asthi (bone), majja (marrow/nerve) and shukra (reproductive tissue).

Sudation (Swedana karma) Therapeutic steam treatments further loosens impurities, and dilates the srotas (subtle channels), which helps the ama and excess doshas to move toward the gastrointestinal tract. So they can be removed more easily via internal cleanse – Pradhana karma (main detoxifying process).

  1. Pradana karma: The main detoxifying process (second phase).

This is the main detoxifying process. The softened and loosened toxins are expelled from body by five methods. Considering these five major detoxifying methods the whole process is named as “Panchakarma” (Pancha = 5, Karma = process).

  • Vamana (Emesis/vomiting)
  • Virechana (Purgation)
  • Basthi (enema with herbal concoctions or with medicated oil))
  • Nasya (nasal detoxification)
  • Raktamokshana (Bloodletting)

The main detoxifying process (pradana karma) is highly specialized and tailored to each person, based on your dosha imbalance, agni, mental stamina, and current health issues.

  1. Pashchat karma: Rehabilitating the diet and lifestyle after the detoxification process (Third Phase)

During pancha karma, your agni will be very low, so it is important to bring it back to its normal position by introducing light and easily digestible diet like rice soup. If you consume heavy food after the main purification which may lead to accumulate Ama again then leads to further disease.

A typical day of Pancha Karma @ Green Spa:

Yoga & Meditation during Pancha karma:

AyurVedic principles consider Yoga and Meditation to be complimentary science for healing and the rejuvenation of mind and body. Whilst AyurVeda focuses on treatment (Chikitsa) of the mind and body; Yoga and Meditation supplements the process through self-development and self-realisation (Sadhana).

Yoga constitutes of Asanas or body postures; scientifically prescribed to stretch, exercise and stimulate parts of the body to provide holistic healing. The primary purpose of Asanas is to bring balance and harmony to the five basic elements that govern the body. It is the balance of these elements that ensures good health, wellbeing and longevity.  Yoga, through Asanas and pranayama (breathing), provides one with a recognizable interaction and connection between one’s body and mind.

What our clients say about Pancha karma at Green Spa

14 Day PK:

I thoroughly recommend the authentic Ayurveda treatments offered here. It is over 3 months since I visited for the 14 day Panchakarma Detox Retreat and I continue to benefit from this experience. Life Changing Experience:

After suffering for 10 years with rheumatoid arthritis quite severely and only getting worse with all the pharmaceutical drugs, I decided to give my health an alternative method of healing,I am so grateful of the fact that I found Green Ayurveda spa. After a few visits for yoga and a gifted spa package I began to realise just how special this little wellness haven is..
I was highly addicted to codeine & sleeping tablets from trying with doctors to control my pain, not to mention all the rest… steroids.. & every biological drug they had to offer ! I decided to book myself onto a Pancha karma detox to help my body rid the toxins I’ve accumulated over the years & learn the healing techniques of Ayurveda .. after my first day I was feeling amazing results..sleeping like a baby without a single sleeping tablet.. by the 3rd day I was free from feeling the need to take any medication..WOWSERS… I’m completely blown away by this.. the combination of healing techniques including diet..yoga ..meditation & lifestyle changes completely made my mind body & soul transform!!! I feel like a different person inside out & I can not express my gratitude to Dr Jolly & he’s absolutely wonderful staff enough. By the end of my 5 day course I felt quite emotional & really didn’t want to leave.. Never in 10 years has a single rheumatologist or GP explained what’s been happening to my body the way Dr Jolly has . I am for the first time in ten years feeling very positive about my health & how to stay on top.
Anybody thinking about a visit here will not be disappointed.. 1 of the best decisions you could make for your health… mind.. body n soul…
Much love to Dr. Jolly n he’s team.. they are all amazing..wonderful people xxxx

5 Day PK:

I did the 5 day panchakarma treatment in August following a really rough 2019 so far.
I wish I could go to Green Ayurveda Spa every week. The massages and treatments were very relaxing and healing. The food was delicious. The yoga and meditation was just perfect too – I never thought I would leave with a daily yoga and meditation practice but so far I have. The nearby accommodation at Priory Barns was luxurious yet affordable. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

5 day pancha karma treatment

I have a 5 day pancha karma treatment by Dr Jolly and Dr Swapna. It has been a month now and I feel much much better than I did. The care and attention they both pay to their clients is top class. From the massages, dietary advice, yoga and breathing exercises. All are advised for the individual. The treatment is not for the faint hearted. If you do decide to do a pancha karma treatment its important you stick to what Dr Jolly advise, then you will feel brilliant after your treatment. I have had been to several other ayurvedic places in the UK and I would rate this one to be the best I have been to. It was the furthest from me but I am so glad I went to see Dr Jolly and Dr Swapna. They will also check your aura and whether your chakras are aligned and give you lots of information to enhance your life in the long run. All the food was prepared by Dr Swapna and it was delicious and the yoga lesson were great, I learnt a lot about where my weak points were and how to improve and also how to and when to meditate.
All in all a great experience!

7 Day PK:

The best detox ever : Completed a 7-day Panchakarma retreat with Dr Jolly. This was simply the best detox procedure I have come across. Ayurveda based, it goes right through to the cellular level. Simple, healing and tasty food, deep tissue massages with medicated oils, intense sweats to let the oil through the pores of the skin, yoga, meditation all combined and tailored to your own specific body type and ailment history. Highly effective, profoundly relaxing. A life-long sufferer of bronchiectasis I emerged from the week with a cleansed and relaxed body-mind and a set of tools (asanas and pranayamas) to help me manage my condition. All in all a remarkable and rejuvenating experience. FD age 68.
